Characters

Player Characters in Silkpunk Victoria typically have had previous life experience before becoming adventures, usually through prior service in a conventional career or vocation.  Skills and expertise acquired during this prior service — as well as the Player Character's characteristics — provide the basis for their adventuring capabilities.

Aeronaut | Alchemist | Constable | Galvanist | Irregular | Machinist | Ranger | Rogue | Sailor | Soldier | Thaumaturgist | Trader


Aeronaut

Aeronauts

Aeronauts serve in the flying corps of the regular military forces of a sovereign state.  Aeronauts patrol land and sea territory from the air, monitor traffic to and from — and within — a state and protect the people of a state from hostile airships and other military forces.

In additional to basic combat, weapons and survival skills, aeronauts will typically be skilled in the operation and maintenance of airships, sometimes even including the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled airship engines and weapons.

As with all characters with prior military service, aeronauts may also be skilled in the less formal activities associated with military life such as brawling, carousing and gambling.


Alchemist

Alchemists are applied scientists who investigate material phenomena and develop materials and devices which apply these phenomena.  Alchemists typically learn their craft through an apprenticeship with an experienced practitioner and are usually employed by a government (often the military), a large mercantile venture or an affluent patron who funds their research and development activities.

In additional to basic technical and administrative skills, alchemists will typically be skilled in the operation and maintenance of alchemical devices, sometimes even including the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled engines and weapons.

As with all characters with prior applied science service, alchemists may also be skilled in other, somewhat unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.


Constable

Constables serve in a municipal or other local police force.  Constables patrol territory, monitor traffic to and from — and within — a municipality and protect the people of a municipality from criminal activity.

In additional to basic combat, weapons and administrative skills, constables will sometimes be skilled in the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled firearms.

Constables may also be skilled in less formal activities such as brawling, carousing and gambling, as well as in more unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.


Galvanist

Galvanists are applied scientists who investigate electrical — and magenetic — phenomena and develop materials and devices which apply these phenomena.  Galvanists typically learn their craft through an apprenticeship with an experienced practitioner and are usually employed by a government (often the military), a large mercantile venture or an affluent patron who funds their research and development activities.

In additional to basic technical and administrative skills, galvanists will typically be skilled in the operation and maintenance of electrical (and magnetic) devices, sometimes even including the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled engines and weapons.

As with all characters with prior applied science service, galvanists may also be skilled in other, somewhat unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.


Irregular

Irregulars serve in mercenary or irregular military forces typically operating outside the authority of a sovereign state.  Irregulars patrol territory, disrupt traffic to and from — and within — a state and fight regular military forces.

In additional to basic combat, weapons and survival skills, irregulars will typically be skilled in the operation and maintenance of combat vehicles and craft, sometimes even including the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled engines and weapons.

Irregulars may also be skilled in the less formal activities associated with military life such as brawling, carousing and gambling, as well as in unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.


Machinist

Machinists are applied scientists who investigate mechanical phenomena and develop engines and devices which apply these phenomena.  Machinists typically learn their craft through an apprenticeship with an experienced practitioner and are usually employed by a government (often the military), a large mercantile venture or an affluent patron who funds their research and development activities.

In additional to basic technical and administrative skills, machinists will typically be skilled in the operation and maintenance of mechanical devices, sometimes even including the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled engines and weapons.

Ranger

Rangers are skilled in pathfinding and wilderness survival.  Rangers typically learn their craft through an apprenticeship with an experienced practitioner and are often employed by an affluent patron engaged in wilderness adventure or sometimes by a military force or large mercantile interest venturing into unexplored territory.

In additional to extensive wilderness and survival skills, rangers will typically be skilled in basic combat and firearms use, sometimes even including the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled firearms.

Rangers may also be skilled in less formal activities such as brawling, carousing and gambling, as well as in more unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.


Rogue

Rogues engage in criminal and other unsavoury activity.  Rogues typically learn their craft through an apprenticeship with an experienced practitioner and usually work for a criminal "boss" who directs and oversees activities but can sometimes be employed by a government or even a large mercantile venture.  Rogues often live by an informal, though strictly-enforced code based upon loyalty and reciprocity.

In additional to basic combat and firearms skills, rogues will sometimes be skilled in the operation and maintenance of craft and vehicles, and in rare cases may even acquire the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled engines and weapons.

Rogues are often skilled in activities such as brawling, carousing and gambling, as well as in the more unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.


Sailor

Thaumaturgists are applied scientists who investigate thaumaturgical phenomena and develop materials and devices which apply these phenomena.  Thaumaturgists typically learn their craft through an apprenticeship with an experienced practitioner and usually work for an affluent patron who funds their research and development activities but can sometimes be employed by a government (often the military) or a large mercantile venture.

In additional to basic technical and administrative skills, thaumaturgists will typically be skilled in the development and operation of thaumaturgical devices, including ætheron-enabled engines and weapons.

As with all characters with prior applied science service, thaumaturgists may also be skilled in other, somewhat unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.


Trader

Traders engage in mercantile and other commercial activity.  Traders typically learn their craft through an apprenticeship with an experienced practitioner and are usually employed by a large mercantile venture, or they may work for small, independent traders which carry cargoes and passengers between markets and ports.  Traders buy and sell goods, seek out new products and raw materials and develop new markets.

In additional to basic administrative and commercial skills, traders will sometimes be skilled in the operation of trading craft and vehicles and in the use of firearms, and in rare cases may even acquire the basic thaumaturgical abilities necessary to operate ætheron-enabled engines and weapons.

Traders may also be skilled in less formal activities such as brawling, carousing and gambling, as well as in more unorthodox activities typically associated with criminal activity.
