Harold Lamb's Central and Southwest Asian Adventures

"For no one in the Zaporogian Siech, the war encampment of the Cossacks along the bank of Father Dnieper, not even the Koshevoi Ataman himself, was better known to the Khan Mirai Tkha than Khlit, the Wolf."
— Harold Lamb, "Wolf's War"

Harold Lamb (1892 - 1962) was perhaps best known for his historical writing, books such as Genghis Khan: The Emperor of All Men (Doubleday, 1927), The Crusades: Iron Men and Saints (Doubleday, 1930) and Alexander of Macedon: The Journey to World's End (Doubleday, 1946), and for his screenwriting, films such as The Crusades (Paramount, 1935) and The Golden Horde (Universal, 1951).  But before he turned to non-fiction and filmmaking Lamb was an accomplished writer of historical and adventure fiction, publishing stories — and serialized novels — in pulp magazines like Adventure and Argosy and stand-alone novels like Nur Mahal (Doubleday, 1932) and Omar Khayyam (Doubleday, 1934).  The University of California has a collection of his papers and works.

Most of Lamb's short fiction was out-of-print after its initial magazine publication — though several of his serialized novels were reprinted as stand-alone works.  Some of his short fiction, focused on his "Cossack Adventures," was collected in the 1960s and published by Doubleday.  A second set of these stories and other Central and Southwest Asian adventures were collected in the 2000s and published by Bison Books.
